What to do when you lose passion for your business?

April 15, 2026

Ever woke up in the morning and the idea of having to show up for your business fills you with dread? Zero energy, zero inspiration, zero passion.

😩 The realisation that the creeping sense of “meh” isn’t just fatigue, but a sign you are completely running out of steam isn’t a fun one. It forces you to face a tough question.

What to do when you lose passion for your business?

I experienced it. So did Wyndi Tagi, an award-winning entrepreneur. In this episode, we explore actionable lessons you can apply to your own business journey.

But let’s start from the beginning.

Wyndi co-founded a successful accounting firm in New Zealand with her husband. Over 14 years, she built a thriving business, nurtured her team, and served her community with gusto. But 5 children and 3 bouts of cancer in, the spark faded.

Here’s her journey.

How do you know you are running out of steam in your business?

For Wyndi, the signs were subtle at first, then impossible to ignore:

  • Everyday tasks that used to energise her became draining 💼
  • Marketing and client management felt like chores rather than passion projects
  • Even holidays weren’t restful. Instead she was still answering emails while at Disneyland 🎢
  • Burnout loomed as a constant companion

Adding to this was her personal health journey. Wyndi faced breast cancer three times during her entrepreneurial journey. Awareness that life is short and energy is precious became impossible to ignore.

“Live fully, die empty” became more than a motto. It became a compass for decision-making. Her body and mind were signalling that change was necessary.

Exploring options: what to do when you lose passion for your business?

So, what could she do? Wyndi considered several options before making a big move:

She took breaks and also experimented with delegation and process improvements, but the spark wasn’t returning. Deep down, she knew something had to change. This is a common crossroads for entrepreneurs, and the key is knowing what to do when you lose passion for your business? You have to explore options courageously and honestly.

Initially, Wyndi suggested to be bought out, but her husband decided he wasn’t continuing without her. The decision to sell the business was made. (I have spoken about selling a service business in a previous episode. You can find it here.)

Preparing for change: selling your business the smart way

Selling a business isn’t just about contracts and numbers. It’s about preparing the business for sale, both externally and internally.

✅ Streamline operations: Wyndi ensured her accounting firm could function without her daily involvement
✅ Support the team: She communicated openly with staff and offered them the first chance to purchase the business.
✅ Protect the legacy: Choosing a buyer aligned with the company’s values ensured continuity.
✅ Personal readiness: Wyndi worked out that as a business owner, your identity as a business owner is not separate from your personal identity. When you are no longer a business owner, a shift in mindset is needed. Preparing for this shift is an ongoing process and something that caught Wyndi by surprise.

Pro tip: If you’re asking yourself “what to do when you lose your passion for your business?”, start by preparing the business and yourself. A clean exit ensures peace of mind and preserves your legacy.

Where to from here? Life after losing passion in your business

So, what happens after the exit? For Wyndi, it was a chance to reset and refocus. Her cancer journey had already taught her perspective: life is precious, time is finite, and energy is limited.

She embraced a new mission:

  • Serve indigenous communities globally: Supporting micro-businesses in Māori, Pacific, and other indigenous contexts 🌏
  • High-value, low-stress work: Focusing on fewer clients, delivering more impact, and protecting her energy
  • Follow the motto: “Live fully, die empty” guides her approach to both life and work

Her passion shifted from running day-to-day operations to creating a community called “The Table,” a platform for like-minded entrepreneurs to connect, share, and learn from each other. Wyndi found that stepping away from the business reignited her sense of purpose. It shows that sometimes, the best way to thrive is to create space for your next chapter.

Key takeaways on what to do when you lose passion for your business

Whether you’re feeling burnout, loss of motivation, or simply questioning your next move, Wyndi’s story offers clear guidance. Here’s what you can take away:

  • Listen to your body and mind: When you’ve lost the spring in your step and it becomes a permanent state of being, something’s off. ⚠️
  • Explore all options: Delegating, pivoting, or selling. Consider all the options. For Wyndi, selling was the answer, but that may be different for you.
  • Plan your exit carefully: If you decide to sell, streamline operations, communicate with your team, and protect your legacy for an easy handover.
  • Redefine your identity: Your value isn’t tied solely to your business. Reconnect with personal passions and values. 🌿
  • Figure out your life motto: “Live fully, die empty” is Wyndi’s. Knowing what drives you keeps you aligned with what matters most.

And here’s the golden thread: every entrepreneur will face moments when the fire dims. Asking yourself “what to do when you lose passion for your business?” isn’t a sign of failure. It’s an opportunity to realign with what truly matters.💡
